Bodegas Navarro, S.A.
Denomination of Origin
The
vines and vineyards were already prosperous in Roman times. Seneca “The Old” and
his son Seneca “The Philosopher” were citizens of Cordoba and it is thought that
they were proprietors of vineyards in Montilla.
The
Denomination of Origin was established in 1944, having the name of two of the
most important wine growing districts. In this day and age there are around
8,700 hectares of vines spread out amongst 18 districts, producing in the region
of approximately 600,000 Hectolitres.
Various
types of grapes are to be found in this D.O.: Baladí, Lairén, Moscatel,
Torrontes, Verdejo and Palomino, but the predominant type of grape in this
region is Pedro Ximénez.
Two
thirds of the soil is of red sand which is a slightly chalky type of clay, a
mixture that produces simple wines. The best areas are called “Alberos” and are
to be found in the heart of the Denomination in the High Mountains.
